Seniors

  • On February 27th, Seniors spent a period looking at college syllabi and discussing differences between high school and college.
  • Apply for Federal financial aid as soon as possible after January 1, 2012. The FAFSA form provides the US government, PA state government, and colleges with information to determine student aid. If you haven't completed your taxes, you can apply with estimated numbers from the previous year.

CAUTION - the website must be FAFSA.ed.gov. Applying is free. There are other copycat sites that will charge you a fee.

The student and one parent will each need a PIN to complete the Fafsa online.

Finaid (www.finaid.org) - Comprehensive source of free, financial aid information, advice and tools.

PHEAA - Pennsylvania's Higher Education Assistance Agency, includes the application for a PA State Grant (May 1, 2012 deadline), Special Programs, tools, etc.

College Resources for students with disabilities

Juniors

February 28th - Juniors were given the article, "20 Myths that could Jinx your College Choice."

PACAC Regional College Fair - The Woodlands, Wilkes-Barre, Monday, April 30th. 140 colleges will be represented at the fair. Students spend about an hour collecting information and talking with representatives and then we have lunch at Olive Garden. Permission slip will be sent home.

Register for the SATs or ACTs. Juniors were given Practice Booklets for both the SATs and the ACTs on Friday, February 24th.

King's College Admissions Office has observed that MORE students do better on the ACTs than they do on the SATs. It may be worth trying sample tests of both before deciding. SAT vs. ACT Comparison Chart

SAT Test Schedule -

May 5th Test: regular registration deadline - April 6, 2012, $49. Late registration deadline - April 20, 2012 - $75. Offered at E. Stroudsburg HS and Pleasant Valley.

June 2th Test: regular registration deadline - May 8, 2012, $49. Late registration deadline - May 22, 2012 - $75. Offered at Pocono Mt. East, Pleasant Valley, North Pocono, and Wallenpaupack.

Register online at College Board. The sooner you register, the better the chance you have of getting the location of your choice. Students will need their Log-in IDs and passwords. I have a list if anyone has forgotten their information.

******Remember to "choose" the colleges that you want scores sent to for free when you register. (If you wait until after the test, the score reports will cost extra)

ACT Testing Registration- $49.50 with writing, $34 without writing.

April 14th ACT Test: regular registration deadline - March 9th, offered at North Pocono.

June 9th ACT Test - regular registration deadline - May 4th.

Sophomores & Freshmen

Juniors will spend a period comparing colleges at the College Board website, researching and comparing colleges and careers of interest.
